Tab actions and navigation
Right-click a tab to pin, mute, duplicate, reopen a closed tab or close tabs on either side. Horizontal tabs keep a readable size and scroll with the wheel, swipe or arrow controls. Vertical rails show favicons until hover, focus or tap expands them.
Independent toolbars and the shelf
Settings > Add-ons lets you install or import Wayfarer toolbar manifests, inspect their destinations and enable or disable them. The shelf displays one selected toolbar. Detach up to three favorites into independent rows, then return them to the shelf. Each toolbar has at most six controls. Toolbar safe mode disables add-ons. This is a Wayfarer toolbar system, not Chrome extension compatibility.
Find, source and saved pages
Use the page right-click menu or Captain’s Cabinet (Ctrl+K) for Find, page source, developer tools, printing and MHTML page archives. A saved archive is a snapshot; interactive services may still require the internet. Page Camera also offers print-to-PDF and image captures.
Images and media addresses
Right-click an image or supported video/audio element to open or copy its media address. Links can be copied or opened in another tab. Some players use blob URLs or segmented streams, so there may be no standalone video file to open or archive.
Importing and exporting your profile
Use the profile import/export controls in Settings > Account & sync to move a Wayfarer JSON profile. It includes saved destinations, preferences and Home Port. It excludes passwords, cookies, browsing history, page notes and crash reports. Account sync uses the same portable data, with a separate choice when profiles conflict.
Using Gobsworth chat
Click Chat in the toolbar to show or hide me. I explain documented browser features and offer buttons that open and highlight relevant settings. I use local phrases and rules, so I may ask you to choose a topic or rephrase. I do not read arbitrary page text, change preferences automatically or run an AI model.
Writing suggestions and sensitive fields
The optional writing assistant uses local English typo and grammar rules. Review a suggestion before applying it. Password and sensitive fields are excluded. It is not a complete grammar checker, and sites with unusual editors may not support the hints. You can disable it globally or for one site.
Chromium and compatibility
Wayfarer is an independent Chromium-based browser built with Electron. It has its own interface, Home Port, toolbars and Gobsworth. Most ordinary websites work, but Chrome extensions and Chrome Web Store installs are not supported by the current beta.
Passwords and the account vault
The optional account website has a separate encrypted password vault. Open getwayfarer.org/account/, sign in, choose Password vault and unlock with your master passphrase. Import passwords accepts CSV exports from Google Password Manager, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Imports are parsed locally. The vault is an unaudited beta; desktop autofill is not included, and a forgotten master passphrase cannot be recovered.
Account sign-in and devices
Go to getwayfarer.org/account/. Email codes create or sign in to your account without an account password. Website sessions survive reloads using secure cookies. Devices & account lets you rename or remove a browser session. The website and desktop browser sign in separately. Vault keys stay in memory and require unlocking after reload.
Privacy and local data
Gobsworth uses local rules and a documented help catalog, not an AI model. Browser profiles stay on this computer unless you enable optional account sync. Sync sends destinations, settings, skins and Home Port over HTTPS; profile sync is not end-to-end encrypted. Passwords, cookies, history and Field Notes are excluded from that profile. The account vault is separately encrypted in the browser.
Keyboard shortcuts and navigation
Use Ctrl+L for the address bar, Ctrl+K for Captain’s Cabinet, and right-click a tab or browser control for its available actions. Open Settings and use search to find any browser preference. Gobsworth links to the precise setting and highlights it; he never changes it merely because you ask a question.
Installing and updating the beta
Download the Windows beta from getwayfarer.org/downloads.html, extract the entire ZIP and run Wayfarer.exe with its runtime files. It is currently unsigned, so Windows may show an unknown-publisher warning. The Android APK is an early testing build with different capabilities. Updates in Settings download and verify a ZIP; they do not install automatically.
Camera, microphone and location
Website camera, microphone and location permissions are currently disabled in this beta. A site requiring these permissions may not work fully. This is a current limitation, not a setting Gobsworth can enable.
Sleeping tabs and saved work
Tab Camp unloads eligible idle background pages to reduce memory use. It protects active work, audio, downloads and developer tools. A parked tab reloads its address; transient form contents and its navigation history are not restored. Save important work before parking tabs manually.
Touch Grass breaks
Touch Grass stores open website addresses in a Journey and starts a break timer. It can restore those addresses and Wayfarer notes, but not unsaved forms or live page state. Save your work before starting a break.
Downloads and files
The beta uses the system save dialog for downloads when download prompts are enabled. General settings control download prompts. Keep all portable runtime files together when moving Wayfarer. Page Camera can save captures as PNG, WebP, JPEG or PDF.
